I'm liking this one too; it has a better pace than the last one I think. I'm more hooked! It's neat to have flashbacks of Russ as a kid too!

I'm finding this third one is holding my interest more than the second one did, too. JSF is
really showing a knack for building a complex story in this one, I think!

How's everyone doing with their "Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne" books? I haven't read for the last 3 nights, and I'm probably not going to be finished with the 3rd one
till next weekend, which puts us right at the end of the month.
How does Monday, June1, sound for the start of the buddy read? |

I'll be away that week as we're staying in a cottage in Quebec while our house is being shown (we've got it up for sale). I might have internet,
however, so I'll let you know. I'll be finished reading the book in a few days, I'm sure.

Good "twisty" story, though!

I understand why you said it's a bit more depressing now! Were you referring to the children? I know that sort of thing hits hard for you.... :(

LeeLee333 wrote:The whole thing about the Ketchems thinking they were doing the best for their children only to end up having made a decision that wound up being such a disaster, their inevitable crushing feelings of guilt, plus the timeliness of the plot surrounding the decisions parents are forced to make today regarding their own children and vaccinations is why I'm finding this one more depressing than I did the other two. My own brother died as a child due to a doctor's negligent misuse of an antibiotic that was so toxic, unbeknownst to my parents, it killed him. I saw what the guilt over them thinking they were responsible did to my family, so I'm sure it's a big part of my feelings about this particular book. I've also seen my daughter wrestling over the whole vaccination issue that's in the news so much these days. I am really pretty impressed with Julia Spencer-Flemming's ability to tackle current issues, as she has in all three books so far, and yet weave such good mystery writing into the plot, too. Not to mention the totally entertaining relationship between Clare and Russ! I'm definitely anxious to see how this whole thing plays out...with both her mystery I'm reading now, and as I get further in the series eventually, with Clare and Russ! And even though the
plots take place in a small town, her books don't feel like the usual "cozies" set in small towns.
Actually, after reading crime novel series written by both men and women, the female writers are winning me over the most, because I find the ones written by the women seem to be more multi-faceted in a lot of cases and don't start feeling as stale as some of the male writer's series' do after awhile. How would you yourself compare the gender-specific writing styles of the crime/mystery writers you've read so far? |

I think I'm right in the middle of the gender issue. I have authors from both sides (male and female) that I follow religiously. The thing with me is that
I find myself less and less drawn to mysteries because they all seem to become so formulaic after a while. It's hard to write a fresh mystery unless an
author comes upon a really unique crime, a fresh setting, or characters that draw you back time after time. It is the latter that keeps me coming back to
Spencer-Fleming books.
Reading this series has made me look around my library to see how many series I own and I've read only the first book. If I had unlimited time I would sit down with all those series and make my way through them. Maybe I'll put that on a personal challenge list for next year. I've never finished Harry Potter for heavens sake!

I apologize but we're off to a cottage in Quebec for a week while our house is being shown; I just discovered that there is no internet access there (which
is great, actually) so I won't be posting for a week or so. Sorry!! I'm bringing the next book in the series as well as a couple of other short, fun
books. Looking forward to the lake and some quiet reading and knitting (and chasing children, of course).

booksalot wrote:My favorite male crime writers are Dennis Lehane (#1 for me!), Jeffery Deaver, and James Patterson ("Women's Murder Club" series). I'm running into trouble keeping up with the series I've started. The authors are coming out with new books before I've even read the early ones from most of the series I have
already. I'll never catch up at this rate!!!!!! I'm hoping I'll start a trend with my reading of the whole Julia Spencer-Flemming series back to
back. Not going to make any bets on that happening, though! The only new books I've bought recently have been fill-ins for series and stand-alones,
though. I'm not going to start any new series till I've gotten waaaaaay further along in the ones I have!

Jackie, I'm back from the holiday and our house is sold but you'll never believe what I did... I left the book at the cottage and I wasn't
finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been so furious with myself. I have ordered it from the library but it'll take a few days. Nice huh?

Well, Lee, who could blame you when you have kids and their things to keep track of. What a bummer!
Congrats on selling your house in this market. Where will you next move take you?

LeeLee333 wrote:No worries, Lee! I just got back into the book last night and see I still have 100 pages left to go anyway! I'm beginning to experience a bit of a "fadeout" about the first two, though! GAH! I've kept the books close, though, so a quick "refresh" scan will jumpstart my memory I'm sure. I'm just rusty on sub-character names but remember the basics of the plots, so I should be OK. Let me know when you're done with book 3, and I'll do the same.
And congrats on selling your house so fast!!!!! |

The housing market here is very very hot as the interest rates are super low. Our house is at the price where a lot of first time home owners can move in and
afford it with the low interest rates. I think there's going to be another crash in 5 years when everyone has to remortgage their homes with a risen
interest rate!!! Whatever. Gives me a headache to think about. We sold in 9 days at asking price!
Our next move is back to the west coast, to Victoria. We're heading for our househunting trip in a week and then we'll be moving there mid August! My family is very happy:) The housing prices in Victoria are through the roof so we're in over our heads for a couple of years while we're there but it's a short, 3 year posting so no worries. Found my book under the bed. ha ha ha. Lee
