I am glad to hear that you are at least getting a little bit of time to look after yourself. I haven't heard back from the job, but I have heard a rumour that it is as good as mine. I hope so, although I am going to feel bad going in to resign if it happens because we have had really bad news at work yesterday. Posts: 1412 08/15/09 01:11 PM	Oh Jackie, my heart goes out to you for all the health care managing you've been doing. My DH had that role with his mom for so many years and I understand completely the toll it takes on one to not only get them to all the appointments but to worry about them and how they are feeling. My DH almost dropped his mom in a parking lot one day when her legs gave out and she couldn't step up into his Tahoe. It was at that time I convinced him to let the health care people take care of transporting her to most of the appointments. I know you are going through a lot and I wish you the best. Marg, hope you hear about the job soon! Ok, Stanton and all the rest of us went to the beach for surf lessons yesterday. Four of the family members were allowed to surf and Stanton got a private lesson/coach. The company M-a-W set us up with is owned by a couple of firefighters and the whole team of instructors are either firemen, EMTs or have some sort of connection to the emergency services community. In addition to being quite nice to look at, the guys were all very understanding of Stanton's limitations. He simply didn't have the strength to paddle a board out to the breaking waves and then haul himself upright so his instructor (Kevin) went tandom with him. Whenever they caught a wave Kevin would get up and then he'd snatch Stanton up onto his feet so Stanton could enjoy the experience. You should have seen the smile on Stanton's face! They also had a professional photographer taking photos so hopefully I can post a couple of the pics of Stanton enjoying his big wish once we get back home. The rest of the family members (dad, sis and sitter) all were able to manage their own boards and eventually stood up to ride a few waves of their own. DH and I along with Stanton's mom enjoyed the shade of a tent and the great breezes off the ocean while we watched the adventures. It was total fun and maybe more exciting for us to watch than it was for the kids to experience. Stanton's mom and I both got teary watching him catch his first wave. Today I think we are looking at the aquarium and tomorrow the kids are going to a luau while DH and I are doing a sunset Catamaran cruise. Either today or tomorrow we will probably also visit Pearl Harbor, the USS Missouri and the USS Arizona. I missed the whole Pearl Harbor experience the last time I was here so I'm looking forward to taking in that awe inspiring memorial. The problem with me getting anyone else to take my mom to doctor's appointments is that these are consults with the surgeon, oncologist, and radiation oncology doctors, not to mention all the pre-surgical testing necessary, and also her gastrointestinal issue and ensuing endoscopy. Even though she's not planning on getting chemotherapy or radiation, the surgeon requires it so all bases are covered with the patient so later, the patient can't come back and say the information wasn't offered to them. And for these and the surgery, I have to be there with her. She's confused enough by all the different doctor's names being flung about, and anyway, I want to hear what they say to her, especially since she's so hard of hearing and refuses to wear the hearing aids she has. I can just see her being talked into something that I myself know would be the last thing she'd want afterwards. And as far as any procedures go, they like to have the closest family member available during them...and that's me. Sounds like you all are having a great time! I do hope you can post pictures of Stanton surfing! What a wonderful experience for him. And what a super little guy he sounds like.

Thanks, Marg. And good luck with your job hopes! My stupid neck and shoulder problems are preventing me from being able to knit, though, and it's one of my favorite ways of relaxing. I also haven't been able to concentrate on reading, so basically what I'm doing to try and get some "down time" is staring at the TV in the evening watching DVD's I have from Netflix.

Lee, maybe things have improved over the years for victims of Pick's and maybe the prospects for you and your sisters, is not as bad as you think. I hope that is the case. Do ask the doctors! Get as much information as you can. Let us know what you find out. Anne, I am thrilled to hear that Stanton the Courageous had his surfing lesson. Great for him to have all of you there to share it with him. He's had a rough go but having a loving and supportive family means a lot. Hugs to all from me. You know ya'll are in my thoughts daily. Jackie, my goodness you are having a time of it. I have been feeling so sorry for myself with all the work it takes to move and the emotional toll of having to move when I would rather not and the financial strain and the lack of control of my life and I am 60!!! Then I read about you and what your poor 88 YEAR OLD mom are going through and I just want to slap myself silly. I guess life is all about stepping up to the plate and swinging the bat at the balls that are pitched your way and you just need to keep swinging until that finally strike you out. Your mother has such courage. I know she must feel blessed to have you there to fight this with her, for her - YOU GO GIRL!!! Hope your husband is feeling better soon and try to get sometime for your self for something totally indulgent now and again. I believe it helps regenerate the spirit and lord knows, the battles you and mom are fighting require a lot of spirit. All of you and all of those you love are in my thoughts and prayers. Trudy

Trudy Your analogy about stepping up to the plate swinging at the balls life throws at us just about says it all. Sometimes it just never seems to end, and some people seem to be so trouble free during their lives, it makes me question a lot of things. But then, we never really know what's going on in other people's lives, do we? I used to nag my mom about things like her not getting a new refrigerator and some other "issues" I've had with her stubborness, and now I also feel like slapping myself silly. She's one of those people who "takes a licking and keeps on ticking" it seems! Good luck with your move and all the stress you're under, too. It doesn't matter what the stress factors are...it's the stress we feel that counts. I was totally stressed out about just the upgrading we did to our house last year!
