Lee, thank you for letting us know how you made out. I am so happy that you are home. I love the name Emerson Evangeline! Take care of yourself and
don't rush your recovery. I look forward to hearing about Seb and your newest arrival Emerson Evangeline when things simmer down for you.

Things are still a bit crazy but Emerson is a quite an easy baby so far. She sleeps ALL the time!! I'm nursing every 2 hours or so with a couple of 3 hour
patches in there (and a few 1 1/2 hour ones too!!). I think her blue eyes might turn brown so she definitely looks like her dark daddy:) I now have a blond,
blue eyed boy and a dark haired, brown eyed girl!! Too fun.
I'm sore but I'm starting to get around a lot better now. I'm napping in the afternoon with Sebastian and letting my husband and in-laws take care of stuff around the house. Sebastian is off and on with Emerson. He hasn't shown any signs of jealousy yet but he really likes to touch her and sometimes isn't as gentle as I'd like (he likes to rub her skin as it's so soft!). I'm trying to relax but it's tough. Seb asks for her constantly so he seems to like her so far!! lol. She doesn't do too much yet so we'll see how he feels about her in a few more months. I think the biggest challenge is my own guilt now that I have another child and I feel like I'm neglecting Seb. It's a learning curve, for sure. Otherwise, all is good and I'm just trying to take it easy and get some sleep. I'll continue to check in though!

oh Lee, it almost sounds like a fairy tale to me. I love when new mothers very candidly express their feelings. I know there is a concern that you will never
love another child as much as you love the first but somehow it all falls into place. You'll find your balance as a mother of two and all will be well.
Enjoy these precious moments with your newborn and know that Seb is well loved and cared for.

LeeLee333 wrote:I have to echo Anne's comment about liking it when new mothers are candid about their concerns and feelings. I can't stand it when women seem to feel like they have to be afraid to express the unavoidable challenges of being mothers! Some of the ads on TV make me want to hurl when they portray motherhood as a constant bed of roses. Glad you're getting the rest you are. It's great you have your hubby and inlaws pitching in as much as it sounds. I can just picture Seb liking to rub Emerson's soft skin! Too
cute. Pretty soon, he'll understand he's her "big brother" now and will most likely settle in to his new "role" in no time.
They'll make quite a pair as one being very fair and the other being dark. Like "salt and pepper"!

Funny you should both mention being candid as a mother. One thing that annoys me about my mother/baby groups is that the mothers all act like they are in
competition or something. It's bizarre to me. Everyone acts like life is great and motherhood is fantastic etc.... I find a lot of my friends are shy about
talking about the issues they are having (with their husbands, especially). I have a girlfriend who is actually nervous about breastfeeding in public because
her son is over a year and she's afraid of what people will think! I think she's got amazing stamina for nursing for that long but I also know that a
lot of other mothers think nursing should stop at a year. I think it's no one's business but the mom and dad's when it comes to raising a child. I
always show utmost respect to my mommy friends for all of their parenting choices, even if it's one I wouldn't do myself. I think being a mom is hard
enough and no one deserves to be scrutinized like that. Being an at home mom is even harder as it's lonely and sometimes monotonous. However, I prefer it
over daycare for various reasons.
Anyway, I guess I'm just saying I like it when people are honest and share their feelings as that's how doors open to friendship :) Btw, Emerson fussed continuously last night. So much for EASY!! lol. I'll try to get some photos up this weekend!

LeeLee333 wrote:There's even a book about the "competition" between mothers (pretty sad isn't it?): The Truth Behind the Mommy Wars: Who Decides What Makes a Good Mother? by Miriam Peskowitz I had it saved in my favorites on Amazon in case my daughter encountered any of this nonsense when she had Olivia. Right now, she's experiencing a little "guilt" that Olivia isn't completely potty trained yet. Since it took me a good year to get my daughter potty trained once and for all, and she was a bit over 3 years old when things started to "click", I've tried to help her not to feel like she's "failed" or "blown it" already! Gads. Of all the people in the world, you'd think other mothers would be the least judgmental of their fellow moms! Turning it into a contest is just...well...inexcusable, IMO! Sounds like you have your head on straight about the whole thing, Lee. It's really funny we're posting about this right now. I was flipping channels this morning at breakfast, and the Retro channel had "Leave it to Beaver" on. Talk about "fantasy land"! Those parents! A suit and tie for the dad, a skirt, pearls and an apron for the mom! And of course everyone was speaking in their most patient, calm voices no matter what! That's the kind of family TV show I was raised on!

LeeLee333 wrote:Congratulations to you and your family, Lee! I too, love Emerson Evangeline's name. Just Lovely. Enjoy the luxury of that help as long as you have it. AND I think you can probably look at kissing any monotony good bye. Like Anne, and I am sure everyone else, I can't wait to hear the stories. As soon as I finish this post I am going to look for pictures. Hope you are feeling better and better every day. Your decision to stay home with your children is wonderful. Do it for as long as you possibly can. Do it for the mothers who can't and would love too. It is wonderful to watch your children grow and change and to be there to experience the wonder and awe of parenting. AND you have nothing to fell guilty about - Emerson is a lovely gift for Seb. She will teach him even more about love than he already knows. I'll bet he will be a wonderful big brother. Trudy

Thanks so much Trudy! I'll be sending pics through email to you all shortly!
As you probably guessed, Emerson is named after literary faves (Ralph Waldo Emerson). Her name was inspired by our couple of years living in the states and in the maritimes of Canada. Her middle name is very significant to us as William Wadsworth Longfellow's house was just down the block from our apartment when we lived in Cambridge, MA. My husband proposed to me on the Longfellow property! Also, my family is Acadian and I had Longfellow's poem "Evangeline" written on our table marker at our wedding (and the head table was named the Longfellow table) as it is a romantic poem about two Acadians. When we lived in Nova Scotia, I went to school in Wolfville where the poem originated. Lots of links there!!

Lee, I love your story. You two went from being a couple who couldn't decide on a girl's name to settling on names that are loaded with special meaning
in your lives. I'm sure little Emerson will love those stories as she grows older. Be sure to write them down for her too. I tried asking my mil about my
DH's name because it has an unusual spelling but she had absolutely no recall of where or why.

Jackie, we almost named her Evangeline rather than Emerson but it just didn't fit with us. It's a bit too girly for our life style!! Also, I don't
like the shortening of the name (ie: Eva, Eve, Angie, etc...) but the full name feels too long.

My husband and I just got Web cams for our computers and I've been playing with mine
all day!
It's soooo weird actually seeing people I usually just email, right there talking to me! Yowza!
Do any of you have one? They are so cool! I can send Olivia video emails now, even though they don't have a Web cam over there. I wish they'd get one so we could chat in first-person mode, but Olivia's such a "phone hogger" when she gets hold of it at home, she'd probably hog the computer if they got a cam!

Lol, no, I'm sure she'll be Emerson and we'll rarely use the middle name. We call her Emmie a lot and just Em as well. Seb calls her "Baby
Emerson" of course. I think she's mostly Emmie. I'm not a big fan of Emma as it's too popular! Another reason we didn't choose Evangeline
is we feared she'd be called something like "Vange" in school ... or worse....VAG!!! and that would be just horrendous!!! lol.

Lee, I love the stories that are behind Emerson's name! I also admire you for putting so much thought into naming her. I shake my head at some of the
names people give their children and how the poor kids suffer in school. I like Em for a shortened version. Lol. Megan's shortened version really
isn't shorter, we call her Meggie.

If you haven't yet seen the latest Internet sensation, Susan Boyle, singing at the auditions for
the British TV show "Britain's Got Talent", you're in for a treat. I've tried a couple of links here, but they aren't working. There
are several videos circulating the 'net; most showing her audition performance singing a song from Les Miserables, and another older recording from 1999 of
her singing "Cry Me a River".
Just goes to show people should never judge by "outside packaging"! I love it! Paul Potts, another unlikely British contestant who actually won the competition in a past season was featured, too, on one of the videos I saw. Also amazing! Susan also used a British expression to describe her total amazement at garnering all the attention. "Gobsmacked"! It's now officially in my vocab! LOL! Nice to see some happy media news for a change! |
