Posts: 554 08/05/08 10:55 PM	Tags : None Your are invited to a Buddy Read of Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich? I am going to be reading/listening to it this month (August) and thought I would see if anyone else is interested. On the back of my CD package it says that it is about "a terrible, blood-chilling crime was commited at the edge of the Ojibwe Reservation, east of the.....white town of Pluto, North Dakota." As time passes the memmory of the crime is almost forgotten, as people intermarry and things change. I am the notorious slow reader with no time and five books going at once. So even if you start the book in a couple of days you will probably beat me to the end. Vacation was very nice. We went to my in-laws beach house in New Jersey. Beautiful beaches and weather! We ate tons of really fun, really bad food and got lots of sun. I didn't get as much reading done as I had hoped to. I'm having an issue with my Thyroid which causes fatigue with a side helping of sleeplessness. Every time I sat down to read I fell asleep. My in-laws probably think I'm Narcoleptic! I slept a ton the first five days we were there. Unfortunately my best sleep came during the day when I was sitting on either the deck or the beach with a book in my hand . I have an appt to see an endocrinologist on Monday and hopefully will have all of this straightened out soon. I set out Plague of Doves this morning and will start it later on today. Posts: 554 08/20/08 09:52 PM	How are ya'll doing with this one? After starting out pretty good I have to admit to getting a little lost with the various stories. I was listening to the book only. SO I went back to the library and got the book! I now have the book and the CD's. I am going to use the book to get grounded then go back to the CD's with the aide of the text. Sorry to be such a loser on this one but I disconnected somewhere Let me know where you are and how you are doing so I can perhaps garnish some inspiration! Trudy

Trudy Well, I finished last night and ended up in a "huh" moment. I need to go back and reread parts to figure things out. I can't seem to keep the names straight and in this book that so important because so many of the people are related. For what it's worth, I don't think I could listen to this book. I've always liked Louise Erdrich and I'm trusting that she won't disappoint me with this book but who knows. At least now I'm alert to pay really close attention to who everyone is. Posts: 554 08/25/08 10:05 AM	This weekend I kind of started over again, because frankly, I was lost. Going back had helped me and I think I am beginning to have a handle ont he story. Having the book as well as the CD's really helps me. I hope to finish the book this week. The book starts with a scene that is less than a papge long. "Solo" is about a man cleaning a jammed gun, a baby whose crying is calmed by music, and the "He raised the gun. The ordor of raw blood was all around him in the closed room." Beginnings are SO important and I think I missed this on the CD, the first time I listened. Sometimes that happens with beginnings, I always remember Sandy saying that it is important to go back and read the first chapter over again when you ahve finished a book. I have to get ready for work. I will go over more this evening or try too. Another thing I think is important is to get the family connections straight. They come fast and furious in the beginning of the book. I will list what I have when I get back. Have a wonderful Monday and a beautiful week!!! Trudy

I'm still not sure I understand how it connects with everything but I'm hanging in there. Speaking of hanging, that scene when the men were looking for a hanging tree was pretty horrific. I'm now into the section where the judge narrates. I'm hoping that is the section that Kathy indicated starts moving along a little better. I think I have the characters connected but Trudy if you should choose to do a character list that would certainly be beneficial. The names are very unusual and I know many of them are related but I may not have all the specific connections exactly right. Anne in Austin "Things are for us only what we hold them to be. Anne, I am only in about 100 pages but I think that the scene titled Solo applies to the deaths on the farm. Evelina tells her mother and grandfater that her teacher's name is Mary Anita Buckendorf and the name "Buckendorf" is what makes Mooshum start to tell the story of The Lachren Farm, where the cows needed to be milked and only the baby was left alive. I do not know how I missed it first time around but I didn't connect it at all, it was like I listened to it and it when in one hear and out the other. I found going back that the stories are easy to remember but the family connections need to be kept clear. Although I think mostly the story is about Evelina telling the stories her grandfather told. AND maybe like him, she is a story teller also, as some of the stories, st least in the beginning are her view of the world and it's characters and events. Trudy

Kathy you finished, right? Anne, have you finsihed now, too? I AM going to try to read the whole thing to the very end. I just do not want to hold ya'll up if you'd like to talk about the book. I am NOT worried about spoilers or anything. Trudy

I can't really tell you what is happening right now as I haven't listened for a few days. I will be having some longer drives coming up as DH and I will be providing in-home childcare for our 11 yr-old granddaughter for the next several weeks. I've been going through my books trying to get organized and came across Tales of Burning Love. Have you read it? It was my first and I really liked it. I may have to do a re-read! I have The Masters Butcher Singing Club and The Last Report on the Miracles of Little No Horse on my To Be Read Shelves. Plague of Doves is the first one of hers that I am reading. It is encouraging to me that it is not a favorite for either of you and that you do have works of hers that are, as I am strugglin with it. Hopefully, I will finish this one soon and will eventually get to the better ones. Trudy
